To be Truly free, in my perspective, people need to give up this "Me First" mentality. People need to be guided by a set of truths, and help each other out. While it is crucial for everyone to pull their own work, if we can learn to sacrifice self benefit for the well being of our fellow brothers, it will be truly liberating to us all. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not speaking of a socialist society, but more of a laid back mentality when it comes to worldly possessions.

I agree. I think materialism and the consumer mentality was our downfall... We started thinking that physical possessions could salve the thirst deep within our hearts. We believed the lie and bought the distractions, and now the world is paying for it.
Materialism and greed, and the agenda of pushing the importance of consumption, is what keeps many of us controlled and asleep. TV is just one big marketing scheme, and the products we buy only bring us temporary happiness. Whatever happened to going outside and enjoying nature, playing soccer with friends, or doing something that didn't involve buying material goods?
We need to get back to the world of free entertainment.

More importantly, we need to get past the mass hysteria that society is suffering from. We need to get people to realize that their hatred for each other is counterproductive, and we should stop taking things quietly when injustice is being done. Get people to understand that if they don't care about the freedoms of others, others won't care about their freedoms either.

I Agree, all of this "Socially unacceptable" and Hatred for those who are different is what is causing the downfall of mankind. People need to learn it be themselves, and to let go of worldly possessions. If everyone helps each other, then nobody will need to help themselves.

I'm glad to hear words like that, friend, considering many use the anonymity of that site to unleash their most hateful and twisted sentiments. I myself have been guilty of it, but that's not the kind of person I want to be. I think that would be selling myself short.

Let's stick to reality. We aren't being oppressed by an idea, we're being oppressed by specific groups of people.
First, the government, which creates the laws.
Second, the banks and corporations, who have no real power on their own but are extremely skilled at taking advantage of government-created monopolies.
Third, the enforcers of the state: military and police are the most obvious, along with the propagandists and and unpaid Uncle Toms who give the system vocal support.

People also use the anonymity of /b/ to express themselves in ways that they would otherwise fear public humiliation for. That's why we were able to have the courage to start threads about this controversial issue.

When everyone realizes that "Socially Acceptable" will in term become "Not Socially Acceptable" then everyone can be themselves, if that makes any sense at all. Then a place like /b/ won't be needed besides for a place were people can converse from distance.

You can't have true freedom before you have true freedom in your mind. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
You can offer people True Freedom, but they will not acept it untill they are truely free inside their own heads. We are talking generations, many generations here, as way of thinking is the hardest thing to change and way of thinking gets passed down from parents to children and only changes slightly on the way.

I's definitely a long, uphill battle. But it will be so worth it in the end Are you sure? Think about it. What would a society with no rules, no government and "chain of command" look like? Let's take a very simple example. You have found a place to live. Built your house, cleared land and have livestock. Someone else needs a place to live but do not want to go through setting it up and doesn't have any qualms just taking what they way. They will either throw you out, or flat out kill you to get what you have built. A middle road is that they settle in and make you their servant. My whole point is...... true anarchy requiers more from a person than any other form of life. Most people are not even capable of behaving like humans unless they have a religion telling them what they are and expecially are NOT allowed to do. If you do away with both religious restraints and governmental protection you are all on you own in a world where there will always be someone larger, nastier and more ruthless than yourself. A truely anarchistic society is a dream. A dream that I personally would like to see possible. But knowing people I also know that a true anarchistic society is impossible beyond forming small enclaves that run things by consensus and which is protected by an overlaying structure that prevents others from just marching in a taking over. And even within such a community true anarchy will just be a breath away from disappearing.

There has to be a "norm" for their to be "different". In that light, you need social acceptance and rejection for this sort of group to come about. In other words, even though this "right and wrong way to be" is counterproductive, we need to at least have some sort of appreciation for what it has let happen.
